Toyland Tales: Sound Effects

Near the end of the project is when I mostly started focusing on adding and creating our sound effects for the game. The reasoning for our waiting until the end was due to us wanting to prioritize all of our functionalities, layout and design before we add in the extra game features like player feedback. We also wanted to see what others might suggest as good sounds or sounds that seem fitting.

When creating the sound effects, I mostly worked closely with our programmer to get them working. Some of the sounds I created myself, like our sound for when the player dies and has to reassemble.

When I was creating this sound, I took some of my lego pieces(the figurine pieces worked the best) and took them a part and dropped them together on my wooden desk to make a sound like a toy was falling and breaking a part on the ground. I recorded this in audacity and then edited the sound by adjusting the pitch, bass and sound.

Most of the other sound effects for sake of time, I found free ones to use off of Pixabay and edited and modified them in audacity. I would mess around with several of the settings to try and create more of an original sound that would match our game. I would also sometimes need to mix different sounds together like our train sound to have them overlap together to make one cohesive sound. I would find sounds of the train horn, the tracks sound when the train is in motion and the halting to a stop near the end and fading out.

These are some screenshots of the modifiers I could and would use when editing my sounds together. After I made a sound effect I would then share it with my programmer who would then test it in the game to see if the sound needs to be edited to be longer or shorter or if it was loud enough and made sense. We would collaborate together to make everything come together and feel more seamless and natural for the players.

Creating the sound effects was a fun and enjoyable experience and when I have more time, I would love to learn more about foley sound effects and creating my own sounds to fit different scenes in film or games. I always found it fascinating watching people in the studios utilizing odd things around them to create every day sounds and it seems like a lot of fun!
