Toyland Tales' Bright Art Start

With this past week being just the start of putting simple systems and models together for a feature test, I had a few things on my to-do list of varied importance as an artist on the team. One thing I went ahead and did was sketch a quick little concept of our main level for the game.

We wanted the game to be somewhat cluttered, because daycares tend to be full of bright decorations and toys. We also wanted to make sure the three main puzzles of the game fit within the setting and felt natural in their place. While this won't be the final look of the level, it's always good to have something concrete to bounce off of. It makes it easier to iterate on the concept and improve it with time as you're making the real version of it. The concept also helped us decide who on the team could model what for this week based on what we'd need. After we have our plain level with movement and at least one model from each person tested this upcoming tuesday, we'll have this concept to keep working off of.

Based on the concept, another member of the team modeled a few simple whiteboards and posters and sent them my way to texture. These were an extra we'll be ready to use once we start building out the room.

Then I decided for my 3d models of the week, we needed more clutter objects with personality. I modeled two different books, one after a specific brand that was always in classrooms for kids that anyone could recognize. They're a very thin styled book, with a golden yellow binding, painted covers, and the cardboard edges showing.

The second book is more generic and simple. Just a red novel  with worn page edges and a kid's bee and flower doodles on the front cover. In the future I'm going to make different versions of this book without the bee doodle on it. Different colors with no drawings on them, so that it will be easier to place several of them for decorating without it looking like 20 of the same book.
